In the past, apart from the Army, the Navy also plays an important role in the national defense since the period of Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Thinburi, until Rattanakosin period. The Navy who fights in the river usually use the paddled boat as the main vehicle. The Navy will paddle near the enemy’s boat and attack the enemy from a closed range. Therefore, paddled boats are also another important vehicle during the war. In the peaceful time, the paddled boats are used in a sport competition, such as, the singing while paddling the boat competition, and boat racing. Traditional Long-boat Racing at Wat Tha Luang began in B.E. 2540. The date of the race was designated on the 6th day of the waxing moon on the 11th lunar month of every year. Later, Nan river water level went down too quickly which was not suitable for the Traditional Long-boat Racing, therefore, the date of the race was changed to the 6th day of the waxing moon on the 10th lunar month. The race takes only one day and the winner and 1st runner up will be rewarded with Luang Pho Phet’s blanket, which later changed to a flag with the picture of Luang Pho Phet.
